Ferentino Rising on a hilltop, at an altitude of 393 m above the under-lying valley of Sacco, Ferentino is one of the few towns of Frosinone's province that has an interesting archaeological site within the urban area with still well-preserved monuments.
For Example:
- Polygonal Walls:
The peculiar feature of pre-Roman Ciociaria are the towns surrounded by polygonal walls dating back to the second century B.C., traditionally known as the Cyclops' towns, said to have been built by the god Saturn. These lively villages are mainly perched on hilltops and their urban structures have been marked by the different civilizations (pre-Roman, Roman, medieval, Renaissance, baroque) that have left valuable traces of their culture.
Monumental Doors: it is worth taking a walk around the circle of the walls along which you will admire the nine monumental doors of the village, variously modified along the centuries. The most famous one is the Bloody Door. Near the Door you must not miss the visit to the remains of a Roman Theatre, only recently unearthed, which dates back to around the second century A.C.
- The Roman Market: the Roman Market, a unique example of indoor shop of the first century B.C.
- Aulo Quintilio Prisco: An important historic paper is the funeral monument of the Roman censor Aulo Quintilius Priscus, an aedicula which bears the last will of this generous personage who arranged an amount of money and food to be distributed to the people and destined sixty sesterces to the maintainance of the monument erected to his memory by the municipality.
- Santa Maria Maggiore:
One of the most ancient churches of Ferentino, Santa Maria Maggiore, a jewel of Romanesque architecture. It was built in the middle of 1100, probably by the same masters that built the Abbey of Casamari. Simple and neat, the facade as three portals of which the central one is adorned with a frieze in Roman marble. Walking around it, one can fully appreciate the magnificence of the complex with its rosettes on the lateral fronts and its bulky polygonal bell tower
